Your first driving lesson: what to expect
By MH Driving School · Published
A practical checklist for new learners in Bradford and Leeds, from arranging pickup to making the most of your first hour.
Before you book
Tell the school whether you want manual or automatic lessons, your pickup postcode and the times you can usually attend. Mention any previous driving experience, including practice abroad, and anything that makes you nervous. This helps your instructor plan a suitable starting point.
Get the essentials ready
You need a valid provisional licence when learning to drive. Bring your licence and any glasses or contact lenses you need for driving. Ask the school beforehand if you are unsure which licence checks are required. Choose comfortable clothing and shoes that let you feel and operate the pedals securely.
Agree where to meet
Confirm a clear pickup location and allow a little time to find the car. MH Driving School collects learners across Bradford and Leeds, subject to instructor availability. Your instructor may drive you to a suitable starting area before you take the wheel; the first lesson does not have to begin on a busy road outside your home.
Start with the basics
Your instructor will explain the controls and help you adjust the seat, mirrors and driving position. Depending on your experience and the location, you may practise moving off, stopping and steering. There is no need to arrive knowing how to do everything. Ask for an explanation or another demonstration whenever you need one.
Finish with a clear next step
Before the lesson ends, discuss what went well and what to work on next. A short note after each lesson can help you remember feedback. Progress varies between learners, so focus on understanding and safe habits rather than comparing your lesson count with someone else’s. Confirm your next appointment and review the school’s booking terms before arranging more lessons.
